Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and anticipate following their progress".
The prominent academic, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released communications revealed that the official communicated with Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it respected the economist's choice to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the directors," the organization commented.
Congressional Action
This announcement follows after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would compel the US justice department to disclose its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will then head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has stated he plans to endorse the legislation, after changing his view on the issue following pushback from his followers.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the Congressional committee last week referenced numerous well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those figures.
The emails showed that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the official to prominent world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were made available with the wider community, he said he assumed "total ownership for my misguided judgment to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to reestablish confidence and fix relationships with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held senior posts under party leaders; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He headed Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments recently on this week, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington where he was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be connected with the institution.
Summers entered the leadership of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO the company leader.
