Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure First Victories Following Player Arrests
The Miami Heat put up eighty-six opening half points versus the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat earned a decisive 146-114 victory against the Grizzlies in their first NBA game after player Terry Rozier was detained for suspected illegal gambling.
Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a broad FBI probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the allegations.
But, the Miami team were focused as they put up 86 opening half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37 year history.
Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also won their initial match after the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the squad to a convincing 139-119 victory over the Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
