Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.

One snub proved sufficient. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, who is far too wily not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is also on the midfielder to adapt to the game plans and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.

The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Individual quality matters but the squad know from bitter experience that there is consequences when celebrity takes over. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the recent team selection. He watched the national side qualify at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched the young talent excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach talk about loving the group’s energy and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in champion style, scoring crucial goals for his club versus their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have made his squad place in serious doubt.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has made him realize that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after proving that he is unafraid to drop big names.

“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham displays the edge. It takes that kind of fire to reach the heights that he reached. We all need to support him and establish a setting where he can [have] his drive towards opponents and for the objectives we are building as a team.”

The star dominated the spotlight at the team news conference for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and the other. Any other news? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to perform well recently but the boss had to consider the player after his display in Manchester City’s win versus the German side this week.

The issue, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager never found the right blend at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s influence in the process.

It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it hurts the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles helps. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision about him for years. I think it matches his abilities best.”

He conceded there are occasions when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has such natural delight to play football, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a specific system, to have a defined role. I think he profits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?

Tuchel mentioned Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring goals from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.

The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to get the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up the captain to net in an international match against Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a score. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of the player under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him committed but he will be watching him closely. Leave self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an even better one.
